China Economy Surprise! GDP Growth Hits 4.5% in Q3 2026 as AI Boom and Exports Drive Recovery

China’s GDP Growth Reaches 4.5% in the Third Quarter

BEIJING, October 19, 2026: China’s economy recorded annual growth of 4.5% in the July–September quarter of 2026, improving from 4.3% in the previous quarter and exceeding economists’ expectations.

The figures released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on October 19 indicate that economic activity gained momentum during the third quarter. According to official preliminary estimates, China’s gross domestic product (GDP) reached approximately 107.11 trillion yuan during the first nine months of 2026, representing an increase of 4.6% compared with the same period last year.

The improvement comes as China continues to deal with challenges in its domestic economy and changing international trade conditions. While manufacturing and exports have provided support, consumer demand and investment remain areas of concern.

Strong Exports Support Economic Expansion

International trade has been one of the important contributors to China’s economic performance this year.

According to the NBS, the total value of China’s goods imports and exports reached approximately 39.94 trillion yuan during January–September 2026, increasing by 18.8% year-on-year.

Exports rose 16.4%, while imports increased by 22.3% during the same period. In September alone, the combined value of imports and exports grew by 27.5% compared with a year earlier.

China’s large manufacturing sector supplies products ranging from machinery and electronic equipment to advanced industrial technologies. International demand for technology-related goods, including products associated with artificial intelligence infrastructure, has also attracted attention.

However, export-led growth carries risks. Changes in international trade policies, tariffs and overseas demand could influence the performance of Chinese manufacturers in the coming months.

Manufacturing and High-Tech Industries Show Strength

Industrial activity remained an important source of support for China’s economy.

Official figures show that industrial production among larger industrial enterprises increased by 5.3% during the first three quarters of 2026. High-tech manufacturing performed particularly well, recording growth of 14.3%, while equipment manufacturing expanded by 10.2%.

Production of industrial robots increased by 29.1%, lithium-ion batteries by 39.5%, and 3D-printing equipment by 62.5% compared with the corresponding period last year.

These figures highlight the growing contribution of advanced manufacturing to China’s industrial development.

The service sector also recorded growth. Its value added increased by 5.2% during the first nine months, with information transmission, software and information technology services expanding by 10.4%.

The performance suggests that technology and services are becoming increasingly important parts of China’s economic structure.

Consumer Spending Remains Relatively Weak

Despite stronger industrial activity, household consumption has not increased at the same pace.

China’s retail sales of consumer goods grew by 1.1% year-on-year in September. For the January–September period, retail sales also increased by 1.1%, according to official statistics.

Consumer spending is important because it supports businesses, encourages investment and creates demand for goods and services.

Relatively slow retail growth suggests that domestic demand remains a challenge. Although some categories, including communication equipment, recorded stronger sales, overall consumer activity has yet to demonstrate a broad-based recovery.

The government has identified expanding domestic demand as an important priority for sustaining economic growth.

Property Market and Investment Remain Major Challenges

The real estate sector continues to put pressure on China’s economic outlook.

According to the NBS, investment in real estate development declined by 20.6% during the first nine months of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier.

Total fixed-asset investment, excluding rural households, fell by 7.2%. Private investment also declined by 10.4% during the period.

The property-market downturn matters because real estate is linked to construction, employment, household wealth and several other industries.

A prolonged slowdown can discourage investment and make households more cautious about spending. These factors may limit the benefits of stronger exports and manufacturing.

Restoring confidence and encouraging sustainable investment therefore remain important challenges for Chinese policymakers.

Can China Meet Its 2026 Economic Growth Target?

China has set a GDP growth target of approximately 4.5% to 5% for 2026. Growth of 4.6% during the first three quarters places the economy within that target range on a year-to-date basis. However, the final annual result will depend on economic performance during the fourth quarter.

The latest figures provide some positive signs, particularly in exports, manufacturing and technology-related industries. Nevertheless, weak domestic demand and declining investment indicate that the recovery remains uneven.

Future economic performance will depend on whether China can maintain its export momentum while strengthening household consumption and business confidence.

Conclusion

China’s economy expanded by 4.5% in the third quarter of 2026, beating market forecasts and improving on the previous quarter’s growth rate.

Strong international trade, advanced manufacturing and technology-related industries supported the expansion. However, slow retail sales, declining fixed-asset investment and continuing weakness in the property market remain significant concerns.

The key challenge for China will be to turn its export-supported growth into a more balanced recovery driven by both domestic demand and industrial development.
