Rally in Delhi: Rahul Gandhi Leads INDIA Bloc’s Fight Against Election Commission Over Vote Theft Allegations

New Delhi | November 1, 2026

The INDIA bloc brought several major Opposition leaders together at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, November 1, for a major political rally against alleged irregularities in the electoral process. Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav and other leaders demanded accountability from the Election Commission, while the BJP strongly criticised the gathering and questioned the Opposition’s claims about public support. The rally turned into a major political confrontation, with allegations of vote theft, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the role of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the future of Indian democracy taking centre stage.

INDIA Bloc Rally Draws Major Opposition Leaders

The gathering was organised by the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), a coalition of Opposition parties, to raise concerns over the Election Commission’s handling of electoral rolls and the SIR exercise. The protest march began near the Minto Road–Connaught Place junction before moving towards Ramlila Maidan. Supporters and party workers from different parts of the country joined the programme. The rally brought together leaders from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal and other Opposition parties. Their speeches focused on electoral transparency, voting rights and the need to protect democratic institutions

Rahul Gandhi Targets Chief Election Commissioner

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi launched a strong attack on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He accused the Election Commission of allowing alleged irregularities in the electoral process and demanded action against the CEC. Gandhi also claimed that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were affected by vote theft.During his speech, Gandhi alleged that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and changes in voter lists had been used to influence election results. He referred to elections in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Karnataka while making his allegations. He further claimed that around 15 per cent of voters had been removed from electoral rolls after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.Gandhi called for Gyanesh Kumar’s removal and said that accountability was necessary to protect the country’s democratic system. He also raised concerns about unemployment, farmers’ rights and the concentration of wealth. In a message after the rally, Gandhi thanked supporters for joining the demonstration and said their participation showed that people wanted their concerns about voting rights to be heard.

Mallikarjun Kharge Calls for Political Change

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also criticised the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in several states. He accused the ruling party of benefiting from what he described as vote theft and said the Opposition needed to challenge electoral irregularities.Kharge called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s removal, arguing that democratic institutions needed protection. His speech reflected the Congress leadership’s position that electoral transparency should remain a major national issue.

Mamata Banerjee Promises Continued Opposition

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said her party would continue its opposition to the SIR exercise. She claimed that people in West Bengal were facing difficulties because of the electoral roll revision process. Banerjee said the fight to protect voting rights would continue through political and democratic means. She also made it clear that the Opposition would not step back from raising concerns about the exercise.

Akhilesh Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav Raise Their Voices

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav described the gathering as a major political challenge to the BJP. Referring to the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, he said the BJP and its allies would struggle to return to power in the state. He also compared the rally to a political battle for democracy and accused the BJP of using the Election Commission for political purposes.Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav compared the Opposition’s campaign against alleged vote theft to the Mahabharata. He said Ramlila Maidan had become a political battlefield for those seeking to protect democracy.National Conference president Farooq Abdullah also spoke about equal voting rights and constitutional equality. He said Jammu and Kashmir was and would remain an integral part of India.

Amit Shah and BJP Leaders Hit Back

The BJP responded strongly to the Opposition’s rally. Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused the INDIA bloc of disrupting parliamentary proceedings, spreading negativity and taking parliamentary issues to the streets.Speaking at an event in Chandigarh, Shah also questioned the timing of the rally. He said traders in Delhi had requested the Opposition to postpone the programme until after Diwali because of the festive business season.Shah referred to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots while criticising the Opposition and also took a political dig at Rahul Gandhi and the Congress leadership.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra questioned the INDIA bloc’s claim of bringing 10 lakh people to the rally. He argued that several chairs remained vacant during the event.According to his statement, around 5,000 to 7,000 seats out of approximately 28,000 chairs were empty between 3:30 pm and 4 pm. He also claimed that nearly 40 per cent of the available space was vacant.Union Minister Giriraj Singh made similar remarks, saying the rally had failed to attract the numbers announced by the Opposition. He claimed that Ramlila Maidan had a capacity of around 50,000 people.Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya also criticised the gathering, calling it a political failure. He expressed confidence that the BJP would return to power in Uttar Pradesh in 2027 and at the Centre in 2029.

A Fresh Political Battle Over Electoral Transparency

The INDIA bloc rally has added another chapter to the growing political confrontation between the Opposition and the BJP over electoral transparency and the SIR exercise. While Opposition leaders have demanded accountability from the Election Commission, the BJP has rejected their political narrative and questioned both the purpose and public response to the demonstration. The allegations made at the rally remain political claims and should not be treated as established findings of electoral wrongdoing. The debate has once again brought the role of independent institutions, voter-list accuracy and public confidence in elections into the national political discussion. With the Opposition promising to continue its campaign and the BJP defending the electoral system, the issue is likely to remain an important part of India’s political debate in the coming months.
