Stock Market Crash: Sensex Plunges 876 Points, Nifty Falls Below 22,900; Investors Lose ₹4.67 Lakh Crore

Indian stock markets ended Monday in the red as the Sensex plunged 876 points and the Nifty closed below 22,900. Weak private banking stocks, pressure on IT shares, elevated crude oil prices and global uncertainties weighed on investor sentiment.

Stock Market Crash: Sensex Drops 876 Points, Nifty Closes Below 22,900 as Investors Face Heavy Losses

Mumbai, October 19, 2026: Indian stock markets ended sharply lower on Monday as selling pressure in banking and information technology stocks dragged benchmark indices down. The BSE Sensex declined 876.37 points, or 1.17%, to close at 73,852.90. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty 50 dropped 257.20 points, or 1.11%, to settle at 22,888.95.

The decline came after Indian equities recorded their strongest weekly performance in six months. Investors turned cautious as concerns about bank earnings, global market weakness and elevated crude oil prices affected sentiment.

₹4.67 Lakh Crore Erased From Market Capitalisation

The sharp decline in share prices reduced the combined market value of companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

According to NDTV Profit, the total market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies fell to approximately ₹468.80 lakh crore by 2:10 p.m. on Monday, compared with ₹473.47 lakh crore at Friday’s close.

This represented a decline of approximately ₹4.67 lakh crore during the period. The figure was an intraday estimate, not the final closing loss in market capitalisation.

Market capitalisation represents the total market value of a company’s outstanding shares. When share prices decline, the combined market value of listed companies generally falls as well.

Why Did the Indian Stock Market Fall?

Several factors contributed to Monday’s sell-off, with banking stocks, global uncertainty and oil prices emerging as important concerns.

1. Private Banking Stocks Lead the Decline

Private sector banking shares were among the biggest contributors to the market downturn.

Axis Bank shares fell approximately 4.2%, while HDFC Bank declined around 2.3%, according to Reuters. Investors reacted to quarterly earnings that raised concerns about margins and profitability.

The decline in heavyweight banking stocks put additional pressure on the Sensex and Nifty. In contrast, some public sector banks performed better, supported by their quarterly results.

2. Elevated Crude Oil Prices Raise Concerns

Crude oil prices remained an important concern for investors.

India imports a substantial proportion of its oil requirements, making the economy sensitive to changes in international energy prices. Expensive crude can increase import costs and put pressure on inflation, transportation expenses and corporate profit margins.

Although oil prices eased during Monday’s session, they remained elevated amid geopolitical uncertainty. Investors continued to monitor developments that could affect global oil supplies.

3. Weak Global Cues Affect Investor Sentiment

Uncertainty in international markets also contributed to the decline.

US technology stocks faced selling pressure on Friday, while Asian markets recorded mixed-to-negative movements on Monday. Weakness in global technology shares added to concerns surrounding Indian IT stocks.

The combination of international uncertainty and domestic selling encouraged investors to adopt a cautious approach.

4. Profit Booking After Last Week’s Rally

The Indian stock market had performed strongly during the previous week.

The Sensex gained 2,256.94 points, or 3.11%, while the Nifty advanced 625.70 points, or 2.77%. The rally was supported by strong gains in IT stocks.

After this upward movement, some investors may have booked profits, adding to the selling pressure on Monday.

IT Stocks Also Remain Under Pressure

Information technology stocks also contributed to the broader market decline.

The Nifty IT index fell approximately 1.3% during Monday’s session. Weakness in global technology shares and concerns about corporate earnings affected investor sentiment.

However, the market did not decline uniformly across all sectors. Public sector banking stocks performed relatively well, with the PSU Bank index gaining around 2.5%, according to Reuters.

What Should Investors Watch Next?

Investors will closely monitor upcoming corporate earnings, crude oil prices and developments in international markets.

The performance of major banks and IT companies may influence market direction in the coming sessions. Foreign investment flows and geopolitical developments could also affect sentiment.

However, a single day of losses does not necessarily indicate a prolonged market downturn. Stock prices can fluctuate in response to economic conditions, company results and changing investor expectations.

Investors should consider their financial goals and risk tolerance before making investment decisions.

Conclusion

Indian stock markets ended Monday’s session sharply lower, with the Sensex falling 876.37 points and the Nifty declining 257.20 points. Selling in private banking and IT stocks, elevated crude oil prices and weak global cues contributed to the decline.

The market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies also fell by approximately ₹4.67 lakh crore by 2:10 p.m., highlighting the scale of the intraday decline. Investors will now focus on corporate earnings and global developments to assess the market’s next direction.
