Uttarakhand Helicopter Crash: Six Feared Dead After Chopper Returning from Badrinath Crashes Near Joshimath

A helicopter carrying six people, including the pilot, crashed near Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Friday, October 30, while returning from Badrinath. The aircraft’s wreckage has been located, and rescue operations are underway. All six people aboard are feared dead, according to preliminary reports.

The incident triggered an emergency response from the district administration and disaster management teams, as authorities worked to assess the situation and establish the condition of those on board.

Helicopter Lost Contact Near Joshimath

According to initial information, the helicopter was travelling from Badrinath towards Dehradun when communication with the aircraft was lost near Joshimath.

The helicopter reportedly lost contact around the Hathi Parvat area, close to Chaai village. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed the crash and said that the aircraft had gone down near Joshimath.

The helicopter was carrying six people, comprising five passengers and one pilot. Details regarding the identities of the passengers and their purpose of travel were not immediately available.

Wreckage Located as Rescue Operation Continues

Following the loss of communication, search operations were launched in the mountainous region. The aircraft’s wreckage was subsequently located near Joshimath.

Smoke and fire were also reportedly spotted by rescue teams during the operation.

District administration officials, disaster response personnel and other emergency teams were involved in the search and rescue efforts. The difficult mountainous terrain and changing weather conditions presented additional challenges for the operation.

While preliminary reports indicated that all six occupants were feared dead, an official confirmation of the casualties was awaited.

Weather Conditions and Aviation Safety Under Focus

The crash has once again raised concerns about helicopter safety in Uttarakhand‘s Himalayan region, where aircraft are frequently used to transport pilgrims and visitors to high-altitude religious destinations.

The India Meteorological Department’s Char Dham weather advisory for October 30 indicated the possibility of light rain and light snowfall, along with thunderstorms, along the Joshimath-Badrinath route during the morning forecast period.

However, the exact weather conditions at the time of the crash have not been established, and no official cause of the accident has been announced.

Investigators will need to examine the aircraft’s flight path, communication records, weather conditions and technical condition to determine what led to the crash.

Previous Helicopter Accidents in Uttarakhand

The latest incident has renewed attention on aviation safety during pilgrimage operations in the Himalayan state.

On June 15, 2025, a helicopter operated by Aryan Aviation crashed near Gaurikund while travelling from Kedarnath to Guptkashi. All seven people aboard, including the pilot, were killed.

Following that accident, the Ministry of Civil Aviation ordered increased oversight of helicopter operations in the Char Dham region. Authorities also directed aviation regulators to strengthen safety monitoring.

The recurring risks associated with high-altitude flights, unpredictable weather and difficult terrain have made aviation safety a significant concern in Uttarakhand.

Investigation and Official Confirmation Awaited

The immediate priority remains the rescue operation and establishing the condition of the six people aboard the crashed helicopter.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. Further details regarding the identities of the occupants, confirmed casualties and the cause of the crash are awaited.

The incident underscores the importance of strict weather monitoring, operational safety protocols and emergency preparedness for helicopter services operating across the Himalayan region.
